Super Mini Challenge

David and Kevin Sweeney, racing as “Team Sweeney Motorsport”, campaign purpose-built racing Minis in the Mini Miglia (nee Super Mini Limited) class of the “Super Mini Challenge” motor racing series. This series is run at National race meetings within the North Island.

The cars are powered by a 1380cc engine, custom-built for racing. The engine and the entire cars are built to meet specific class regulations. The cars produce approximately 120hp, which when combined with a minimum weight limit of 670kg including the driver makes it very fast, with top speeds of approximately 200 km/h.

Team Sweeney’s Racing History

The 2000/ 2001 Koken Tools Super Mini Challenge Season was the first year of the new Super Mini Limited Class. Results from the 2000/2001 season saw the Team Sweeney Mini, driven by David, score top three places in class in all races finished, with 10 first places, 4 second places and a single third place result. In addition to these class results, we scored 6 outright race wins during the season.  The season brought class victory in the Super Mini Limited class, finishing third overall in the Super Mini Challenge, as well as the award for Best Presented Team for the year.

The 2001/ 2002 season saw a continuation of the strong performances of the previous year.  With increased competition across the field, and a few non-finishes, Team Sweeney finished the season in second place in the Super Limited Class, and fourth overall in the Super Mini Challenge. Team Sweeney were again awarded the Best Presented Team for the year.

During the 2002 / 2003 season Team Sweeney competed in only the “top half meetings” at Pukekohe and Taupo, electing not to contest the meetings at Manfeild circuit. Our new sponsor for this season, EDL Fasteners, was treated to consistent “podium finishes” in the class, with four 1st places, 10 second places and a single third place finish.  Off the track we were just as well noticed, being awarded the Best Presented Team of the series, for the third year in succession.

The 2003/ 2004 season again saw our Team Sweeney car running with the blue of our major sponsor EDL Fasteners. Once again we launched into a season-long battle with Lex Wallace at the head of the Super Mini Limited class. Throughout the season we kept Lex honest, with hard-fought races from October’s opening round through until the season finale at Manfeild on Anzac weekend. We scored a total of six class wins, including two outright race wins, numerous second places and several third place results on our way to finishing the season in 2nd Place in the Super Mini Limited Class and 4th in the Overall standings for the Super Mini Challenge.

This season David’s father – Kevin  Sweeney – made himself well and truly known in the Super Mini Challenge, it could be said as the second Team Sweeney driver in the older-sister car to David’s. As shown in the photos, the older car is matching with the black & blue grille colour scheme. Kevin’s season saw him competing at six of the nine round series, electing to miss the three Pukekohe rounds and concentrate on Taupo and Manfeild. Strong performances from Kevin all season long saw him steadily improving, culminating in a third place qualifying position at the final round at Manfeild, and some excellent race results.  Margaret Sweeney (Kevin’s wife) was presented with the Koken Supporters Trophy in the 2003/2004 season.

Team Sweeney were also presented with the KAMM7 Trophy, the Prodec Salver and Best Presented Car Trophy for the best representing the “Mini Racing Team Spirit”, for Team Presentation and Car Presentation at the 2004 Prizegiving Dinner.

The 2004 / 2005 season saw David competing in fewer race meetings due to participating in the Targa NZ Rally in October and enjoying some time off in the South Island during January with Michelle.  When competing, David had consistent places in the Super Mini Limited class which saw him finish 5th overall in the class for the season despite competing in only four of the nine racing rounds.  Unfortunately, Kevin’s season came to an early end at the New Years Meeting in Taupo with the car being damaged beyond repair.

The 2005 / 2006 season saw Kevin competing in all rounds of the Super Mini Challenge following a rebuild of Car #62.

The 2006 / 2007 and the 2007/2008 seasons once again had Kevin carrying the flag for Team Sweeney, competing in all rounds of the Super Mini Challenge, with Kevin enjoying many great races with the crew from Team Wintec and the other drivers of the Mini Miglias.
